But I am saying that if hip hop wants to be more than top 40 fluff, if it wants to mean something to people like it did in the 80’s and early 90’s, if it wants to speak for a generation, then it needs to get out of the money game and start getting back into making real music for real people. It is the only way.” [via beatmixed]

  1. You’re right, the p-diddys won’t hear it. But that’s ok! As long as you did! Not that you would, but never buy the crap they put in the record stores! Support real artists and maybe things will change someday.

  2. what’s mostly called for imho is a questioning of the huge PR machine, that manages to sell the crap – in huge numbers. i think kids naturallly do this already and they will start to check out social networks like myspace for bands and music much more in the future. but for some reason the myspace “success-stories” have all envolved rock bands with a very “college” alternative sound. i dont understand why that is, tbh.

See, I think I can tell you. The indie rock scene has a great underground. There are thousands of bands making actual music. Nobody is trying to get rich quick or capitalize on the latest sound. They write good music, they put time into practicing, and they put on great shows. More importantly, they have a cohesive scene. They may not have a political message but they have a unified aesthetic which makes them much more powerful.

Hip hop is the exact opposite. There certainly are people out there making good music, but most are in it for the cash, don’t care about their product or their live show, and have no sense of unity.

  4. Some names for hope in the 00’s:

    Dälek
    Techno Animal
    Antipop Consortium
Reverse Engineering Reverse Engineering (w00t, CH!)

Yes, some of them are already discontinued, but still – just to show that it is possible!

My favorite remains this one track from the french Rapaces because ofits fierce anti-religious tones (Rapaces basically make anticapitalist hip hop).

And for those of you understanding Adolph’s language: MC Zuhälter – untalented, NSFW but somehow funny in his bashing of all the big names (?) of german hip hop

  5. I liked that Rapaces track, even though I couldn’t understand a word. Just goes to show, the lyrics aren’t everything. Make good music and people will respond.

  6. yes klav, some excellent stuff in those links. and sorry for just aproving that comment now. dammit, i thought i receive an email if comments are held in the approval queue.

  7. I liked that Rapaces track, even though I couldn’t understand a word.

    Cool. 🙂

I’ll just translate my favorite sentence:

“Do your prayer in your ghetto so that you’re well controlled / You burn your neighbor’s car instead of the one of the rich who’s stealing you.”
