White Noise For A Dark World – a selectah j mix

The loving part means that we have to see how we treat each other, because it means that we gonna create this new society right out of what we are doing to each other, or trying to do better in terms of how we wanna be loving to each other […] we can’t say that ‘Oh, we’ll change after the victory.’ The victory is really how much we can accomplish as we struggle in changing our own social relationships. – Ashanti Alston

This is not really a mix. It’s more like a collage. The goal here was to create a very relaxed musical sound scape, something you can listen to, when the noise of the world gets too annoying. Hoping that it will function much like white noise that will drown out the nasty stuff in a sea of pleasant sounds.

The term is also used for a discrete signal whose samples are regarded as a sequence of serially uncorrelated random variables with zero mean and finite variance. – White noise – Wikipedia

To accomplish this I used some of my all time favorite ambient music and added tons and tons of moody samples.

This mix proves two things:

1. I watch way too many TV series (judging from the crazy amount of different shows snippets were used from)
2. My outlook on life (and the world) can be as dark and grim (sorry, about that) as it can be optimistic, and that is not a contradiction in my book.

I guess some people will jump again and call me depressed. But I don’t see it that way. First of all, labels are cheap and much too constrictive. Labeling other people is usually done out of a fear of having to face certain issues. But even more pronounced, when looking at the state of our world, I could just as easily turn this around and wonder about people, who are not depressed, at least to some extent. I mean, have you looked around yourself lately?

Depression gets much too bad of a rap indeed. Why do we call it depression, and not Sacred Melancholia, or Dark Night Of The Soul? Suddenly it looks and sounds different, much more dynamic, constructive and it has a purpose.

Anti-depression pills? No way, why dull myself? Suicide is not an option for me, just like in the quote below, I lack the constitution for it. So let’s just stay and bare witness.

Rust Cohle: I think the honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming. Stop re-producing. Walk hand in hand into extinction. One last midnight, brothers and sisters, opting out of a raw deal.
Marty Hart: So, what’s the point of getting out of bed in the morning?
Rust Cohle: I tell myself, that I bare witness. The real answer is that it’s obviously my programming. And I lack the constitution for suicide. – True Detective (Minute 6:30 in the mix)

I would not go as far as calling for our extinction, yet (although the thought has crossed my mind before). The thing is, there is always hope. Things can change. But I for one think that in order for things to change we all need to wake up and have a really hard look at everything, starting with ourselves, and beginning there. I love everything Ashanti Alston says on the topic. Anarchism for the win.

I hope you enjoy this selection.
And please do tell a friend 😉
