squarepusher - just a souvenir

“New Squarepusher album, exclusively available on Bleep NOW in advance of the CD & LP release on October 27th. Album is available as a bundle only, including a digital booklet.”

squarepusher creates complex music, always brilliant, sometimes genius, but definitely never easy to listen to. what i mean to say, it’s not music intended for background listening, you actually should give it time and space. nevertheless his latest album seems almost ideally suited for iphone/ipod touch. each track comes with individual album art, nothing too dramatic, but subtle changes in color and pattern. very pretty shit on the pretty screen of my pretty ipod touch.

oh, and i also bought the new bomb the bass album, while i was at it. epic. needless to say that bleep.com remains the best mp3 download store there is.

radiohead greatest hits are a scam

i feel terrible. yesterday i bought the radiohead greatest hits cd after stumbling over an advert for it. i usually trust things blindly when it comes to radiohead, i just buy any new record i spot. it did strike me as odd somehow, when i saw this greatest hits release, because i seemed to remember, that the band is not too fond of the concept. they look at each album as a unit, the songs not making sense when ripped out of context of the album. but then i looked at the tracklist and decided, spur of the moment, to buy it, all their best songs assembled on one disc, great for the car, i thought.

at home i started to listen to it and googled the tracklist online, wanting to check what albums some tracks are on. but what did i see? EMI has released this greatest hits album without the band’s consent.

EMI are set to feel Radiohead’s wrath once more following the news that they are to release a greatest hits album to coincide with the band’s summer world tour.

The news follows the release of EMI Radiohead box set last December to coincide with the release of ‘In Rainbows’.

Ed O’Brien told Canadian music-TV presenter Strombo: “They’re planning to do a greatest hits for April, May to coincide with our tour. That’s an interesting one. We won’t be doing any promotion for that, obviously.”

However, while the band are obviously not too happy with the release they are resigned to the fact that they can’t do anything about it.

Phil Selway added: “It’s well within their rights to do it. So we’ll have to see.”

darn. i feel like an idiot for buying the record now.

on a different note. here’s a excellent radiohead mashup some guy did: “I grouped together a collection of old redundant hardware, and placed them in a situation where they’re trying their best to do something that they’re not exactly designed to do, and not quite getting there.” the result is stunning:

kraftwerk themed dj-mix by strictly kev

something kinda messed up, i think, but i am glad it did. a few days ago the solid steel podcast rss feed announced it as the latest edition, but as it turns out it was aired back in january, on 11. 1. 2008 to be precise.

but no matter what, its a real gem of a dj mix by strictly kev dedicated to all things kraftwerk, using mostly music inspired by kraftwerk or versions of their songs spiced up with samples from interviews with them. many materials i had never heard before. i especially love the kalyanji anandji version of das model entitled Y.o.g.a. fantastic.
