pieceoBabbel lists 2003

in times when all the magazines have moved the best-of year lists to their november issues, its only fair that i wait for the last minute to publish mine…
plus there is another issue here: we actually wonder what happens to all the things released in say december 2003?
will these appear on the 2004 lists?
or will they fall through the cracks because they next october they will be soooo last year???

compilations:
various artists: boom boom selection
3 data-cd’s stuffed full with mp3’s covering all things bootleg. amazing job by the guys who ran boomselection.info, the weblog that was the central switchboard of the bootleg scene.
for great bootleg linkage also check base58

various artists: sonic mook experiment 3 hot shit - mute
punk and rock for dancefloors - with an attitude! a portrait of the rowdiest club trend in london, the great sonic mook nights. CD with THE greatest coverart of recent times plus THE cheesiest liner notes ever!

albums:
the white stripes: elephant - v2
its one of these albums that runs like a ripple through all of musicland.
it says: rock is back, it does so loud and clear.
and it fuckin… errrr… rocks.
plus: 7 nation army even worx in clubs.
i tested this, after i could get the cd-player to work.

prefuse73: one word extinguisher - warp WARPCD105
i can’t really say i love this, yet i do say this is very relevant! moving along that line where electronica and hiphop meet, it never gets totally exiting but always stays top-quality.

peaches: fatherfucker
ahhhh peaches… a huge relief to find that her second album was just as great as her first one, and that she did not allow herself to get pigeonholed in the electro-clash or any other silly category.
very punky. and we likeeeee

kraftwerk: tour de france soundtracks
the old boys from düsseldorf are finally back!
nuff said!

books:
chuck palahniuk: diary
chuck delivers! at first i did not enjoy this book at all, maybe my expectations had been toooo too high. but the storytelling goes crescendo! and in the end i had to force myself to read slower in order to make the reading pleasure last longer…

tom robbins: villa incognito
one book every 5 years and then such a short one … shame on you!
and tom robbins still has no website nor a blog, or nuttin…
but still, we are graetful. we are not worthy.

movie: 28 days later by danny boyle
even if i am THE only one: i totally loved it…
tv: otherworld [the fantastic series that never got aired in the us was shown here in switzerland and IT IS FANTASTIC. 24h can forget about it compared to this] chris morris’ jam [the radioshow turned tv-series finally on dvd]
website: 4rthur.com [online community like they ought to be]
game: splinter cell [stealth action seems to go well with my sneaky character], jak II [when jump&run meets action/adventure. non-linear story-lines are the future!!!]
game bummer: uru [the sequel to myst and riven] only came out on the bloody pc [cheerz mr. gates!]
hype of the year: flashmobs [it was fun for maybe 3 minutes…]
geeky joy: moblogging [such immediacy, so exiting]
political bummer: war in iraq, dubya lying, blocher, aaahhnold… whats going on here? is this the it-gets-worse-before-it-gets-better-part? or did somebody flip the wrong switch?
career: who cares… can i please enjoy my early retirement in peace?

pieceoBalls 1′000’s of mini-beckhams!

found this extremly funny piece in todays guardian, g2, the readers pick of the guardian 2003.
originally published as “Pure theatrical Viagra” by Jim White (G2, March 26 2003).

We all know how David Beckham celebrated his goal against Argentina in last summer’s world cup in Japan. He ran to the corner of the ground where England fans were in profusion and, his face split with joy, held out the front of his shirt as if asking his mother to explain a particularly stubborn stain…

Apparently, at that point, celebrations back home got a lot more fundamental than Beckham’s odd shirt behaviour. According to the supermarket chain Asda, there has been something of a boom this month in sales of baby products - precisely nine months on from Beckham’s goal. More nappies have been sold this month than is usual, sales of wetwipes are up by 12,000 packets a week, and little pots of unidentifiable mush labelled Lancashire hotpot have been flying out of stores everywhere as if rocket-propelled. Everywhere in England, that is. In Scotland, sales have remained steady. Unlike the performance of the Scottish football team…

It was more likely the drink talking - the result of the biggest expression of public inebriation since VE Day (a vast street party which itself had significant parenting consequences nine months on). The match kicked off late-morning British time, and was largely watched in pubs. A whole afternoon of pleasurable rejoicing left millions of us in a relaxed and accommodating frame of mind. And while the male portion of the population discovered it was almost as accurate as Beckham, the female part of the bargain lay back and thought not so much of England as of the finest example of English manhood since Cary Grant. Trust me, it wasn’t us that got them all excited.
i wanna have your baby, becks

quote [...] unquote a new gameshow

[…] the season-ending episode of the popular game show, in which twelve contestants are given mystery injections and have to wait a week for the results. ten are harmless, and the contestants win only the home version of the game. one injection creates the famous ‘visacard’ logo on the winner’s skin, signnifying that he or she has won a million swiss francs. the twelfth contestant - a designation the show has now made famous - spontanously combusts. the fun comes in watching what the contestants do during the seven-day countdown as the wait to discover their fate on live television at week’s end. cybaH_blahBlah size matters [not]

so me and yodda would disagree on this point, but i still think it does matter. do you?
well, here is some highly interesting info i found about animal’s penis sizes [in erect state]:
surprisingly short is the gorilla’s best friend with 3 cm, which is even shorter than an orang-utan’s 4 cm and a chimp’s 8 cm, who both are physically much smaller than the gorilla.
to sum up: monkey’s certainly do not seem to be extremly well hung. there’s hope for the monkey chicks… maybe they make up their lack of size with the most acrobatic of techniques!!!???
on the other end of the scale the giraffe sports a 1 meter bone, which is beaten by the elephant with 1.50 and the bluewhale with an unbelievable 2.50. you whale chicks in the back may start squealing…

testicle weight relative to bodyweight is another interesting indicator: again the gorilla is found at the bottom of the scale: 0.02%, whereas the rat 0.68% and the horse 0.71% [that’s 340 g of nuts] are the winners in this particular category.

so what have we learned? uhm nothing i guess. except maybe we now understand why whales do seem to squeal an awful lot and why gorilla’s tend to look so grumpy?

by writing this do i admit to having the archetypal male obsession with penis size… do i???

pieceoBeatz post-dj wobble

e_shox1e_shox2e_shox3
last night the dj was shite!
on one hand it was great to dj again, and at the same time i am totally glad i dont do this too often anymore.
hell, dj-ing is sooo stressful.
next day now. i am all bombed out, my brain inna mush, wobbley behind cotton, the world out there a blur. these words unreadable on the screen… i exaggerate, but only slighly, itzah killah.
i fucked up something terrible last nite … and, as usual, nobody noticed.
who cares about the dj’s performance? only other djs/music-fashists.
we had a guest from france, a great dj technically, but a real arrogant prick. a friend tells me, she thought he was so full of himself, that it looked like he was getting himself off on the mixing deck.
i often wonder these days, is the area of the dj coming to an end?
