[swiss] tv moment of the weeK:.

swiss tv had the “great” idea to show the inaguration of 43 km transalpine lötschberg tunnel in a 3 hour live transmission. after what seemed like hundreds of deeply moving interviews with monosylabic “mineurs” - no idea how these are called in engrish - [tv presenter: “so how do you feel now that this break through is about to happen?” goofy looking mineur (wearing neon coloured workgear): “great …” tv presenter: “so what are you going to do next?” mineur: “dunno …” etc. etc.], finally the great moment: the symbolic blasting of the last few meters of rock.
however however however…
the first detonation did not break through as planned and while we were enjoying the spectacular images of the detonation in superslowmotion, everybody had to wait for a good half hour, till the dust settled and the poisonous gases evaporated, to even notice this failure.
HYSTERICAL! but i guess you had to be there…

question of the weeK:. why does the smell of my own farts not bother me?

gadgetMinded a worm that eats mp3 collections

it seems that there is a worm out there that will delete all mp3’s from an affected pc’s harddisk, whipe out entire mp3 collections.

now, this so sounds like a rumour spread by the music- and filmindustry? yeah, it does huh…
but apparently it’s quite real. heise.de quotes sophos [a producer of anti-virus solutions] and describes that the worm is disguising as a dvd-ripping tool “AnyDVD 5.1.0.1 Crack+Keygen By Razor.exe” on emule and other filesharing networks. [macs are not affected. pheew] luckily W32/Nopir-B is not very widespread as of yet.

i find this somehow very amusing and puzzling at the same time. why would anyone go through the trouble of coding such a virus? what’s going on here? maybe we are dealing with a fan of pope benedict XVI who is quoted saying that “Rock music is a vehicle of anti-religion.”

quote [...] unquote gadgetMinded my name is jan and i am an emailaddict

email can make you stupid - carrie mclaren’s (of stay free!) rant about the effects of email.
Emails ‘pose threat to IQ’ - the guardian article he quoted about the study.

“The distractions of constant emails, text and phone messages are a greater threat to IQ and concentration than taking cannabis, according to a survey of befuddled volunteers.

Doziness, lethargy and an increasing inability to focus reached “startling” levels in the trials by 1,100 people, who also demonstrated that emails in particular have an addictive, drug-like grip.

Respondents’ minds were all over the place as they faced new questions and challenges every time an email dropped into their inbox. Productivity at work was damaged and the effect on staff who could not resist trying to juggle new messages with existing work was the equivalent, over a day, to the loss of a night’s sleep.”

this is why i usually enjoy spending a few weeks a year up here in the mountains where only a lousy, whiney, miserly 56k dial up line connects me to the interweb… the first few days up here can be kind of tough, but after that i am quite happy to fall into a two-times-a-day online rhythm. same with gprs. i am actually quite happy that it is still so totally overpriced, because otherwise i would check email all the time via my mobile phone.

hoppla. thanx to my rss reader i just per chance saw this update over at stay free!… outch.
UPDATE: This “study” is based on very sketchy research and appears to be part of a publicity campaign by Hewlett Packard. Thanks to the Daily Heights for setting us straight.

burning flipside

coming up end of may, burning flipside, an art and music festival/temporary community held near austin, texas - inspired by the great burningman festival in nevada. hmmm. this is tempting. its closer than nevada, i have never been to texas (i have no exes in texas yet) and its also not in september right at the same time as ars electronica in linz… i am a little worried about the “church night” and all that however.

oh, and i heard about this because they are currently looking for noise and sound to use in the rocket that they are building for this years festival.

quote [...] unquote c-word hornby on hair and depression

since yesterday i screwed up the link to the nick hornby story @ the guardian here are some quotes from it:

We step on to the street, and pass a young man with a sky-high Afro. “Oh God, I was dreading this,” says Hornby. “It was great when it was cool to be bald, but now hair’s back in fashion.” […] “He made the mistake of having hair, which I always think is vulgar and rather unfashionable and cheap.” […] “I wouldn’t call it depression now. It’s just a sort of strain of English miserablism, where you know everything is crap and everyone who pretends it isn’t is kidding themselves. Yeah, this is the best it will ever get.”

pieceoBeatz pieceoCast pieceocast friday . 012 1/2

sorry, no mix this week. i am having some trouble with the latest version of traktor, the dj software i use, because as it turns out it does not really work well on my good ole powerbook. it needs 1 Ghz | 512M RAM, while this here first generation G4 titan powerbook only has 500 Mhz | 256 M of RAM… so i can’t really produce a mix this week. i still have to fiddle around and see if i can get things to work. ugh.
or then re-install the old version of traktor?
or buy a new ‘puter?
itsah killer…

instead here are 2 very strange german songs, in a genre called “deutsche schlager”. be warned, swiss/chinese olympic gold medalist donghua li may be a great gymnast, but he can’t really sing, so be prepared to cover your ears.
first, he will “do it” to heidi, following the truely grandiose intro, and then you will hear his supremly off-key rendition of “schön ist [es] auf der welt zu sein”.

classify under: odd extreme.

donghua li: heidi [1.9M | 1:19 | 192 kbps]
donghua li: schön ist [es] auf der welt zu sein [1.3M | 0:54 | 192 kbps]

both tracks are from a cd entitled “olympiasieger donghua li präsentiert seine lieblingslieder”.

also quite odd: Rolf Is a Nazi: A SongFight Tribute to The Sound of Music, you guessed it, cover verions of songs from “the sound of music” soundtrack. try the sound of music and doremi [via otro miguel]

the pieceocast can be accessed here:

this will pick up all the mp3’s i link to from my blog.

earlier pieceocasts:

to find the earlier pieceocasts please check this list with links and stuff.
or look directly in this folder.
