[teh glorious interweb what got stuck in my :flash: camino tabs this past week]

the most overhyped gadget ever? we hope so

:flash: Battle of the Buttons - Will the iPhone Succeed? - “You can’t add software. You’re prevented from using the network you like for all your activities. You’re trapped in the walled garden that is US mobile. If your software needs are exactly what Steve Jobs and AT&T dictate and if you don’t mind AT&T’s hand in your wallet, then fine. But my recommendation is to buy an open device that maximizes your power and control of your software and pocketbook.” and i didn’t even know the one about the crippled wifi …. ha haaaa.

:flash: Apple iPhone vs Nokia N95 - i am glad to read that in comparison the N95 says yes where the iPhone no says on all the features that really matter: 3G, exchangable battery, expansion slot, user can install third party software, voip. and let’s not forget the N95’s 5 megapixel cam, even if it starts up way too slow.

:flash: OMG! I Got An iPhone! - spoof iPhone version of the original and still very scary Nintendo Sixty-FOOOOOOOOOOUR video. [via bb]

:flash: First iPhone Campers Not What Apple Expected - “this grumpy guy is probably not what Apple expected when it envisioned the perfect customer for the iPhone.”

one question remains, why is it that eventho all the experts [gizmodo, endgadget, wired, boingboing] were dismissive, the hype never ceased to get bigger? i could well imagine that many buyers will wake up to a bad hangover when they realise how they fell prey to pure hype, noticing how much the iPhone will cost them compared to how limited it is.

epilepsy enducing webdesign

:flash: MIA - weeee. i R flashing website, roooaaarrrr.

:flash: Cassette Playa - Aceeeed sartorialism - the designer of the M.I.A. website.

:flash: paper rad - maybe the inspiration, but more likely similar myspace sites are.

schmooze

:flash: Latin You Should Know. - “mostly, it’s worth learning a bit of Latin because omnia dicta fortiori, si dicta Latina: everything sounds more impressive when said in Latin.” Quod erat demonstrandum!

:flash: Secrets, Cubes and Corporations: An Interview With Douglas Rushkoff - “We get deep into cult phenom The Secret, his next book Corporatized: The Myth of Self Interest and the influential mindfuckery of Muppet master Jim Henson’s trippy short film The Cube.”

:flash: Warren Ellis To Join Suicide Girls As A Columnist - “SuicideGirls is excited and proud to announce that writer Warren Ellis will begin his new column “The Sunday Hangover” on July 1st 2007.” and warren can hardly believe it: “Once a week, they will be paying me actual money to write The Sunday Hangover, wherein I will basically be emptying my brain on to the screen. Which, frankly, may be just as disgusting as it sounds.”

:flash: Improve Your Sex Life with Yoga - “But better sex? Really? You betcha. Yoga offers myriad physical and emotional benefits that add up to more fun between the sheets and a more fulfilling, meaningful sexual relationship with your partner.”

:flash: Finally - iPlayer to launch next month - “You’ll be able to download shows up to 7 days after they are aired on normal TV; once you’ve downloaded it you’ll have a maximum of 30 days to watch it back - but once you’ve started watching, you’ll only have 7 days to finish before the file is automatically erased.” and it does so using the microsoft drm.

:flash: Giant microwave turns plastic back to oil - “A US company is taking plastics recycling to another level – turning them back into the oil they were made from, and gas.”

:flash: Face your pockets! - “Things that are living in the pockets of your bag, jeans or jacket.” [via frenzine]

:flash: My favourite Glasto shot… - and mine…

:flash: Videogame addiction NOT a mental disorder confirm experts - “There have doubtless been lost jobs, failed relationships, sudden acts of frustrated violence and, more disturbingly, a handful or reported deaths from extended MMORPG sessions, but nothing to pin a major mental disorder on.” pheew.

:flash: Immaculate Mp3s and Tiny Doodles - excellent mp3 blog publishes doodly drawings with each track.

:flash: www.myspace.com/antiqcool - this band has a very meditative sound.

:flash: Purr - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - now there’s a question worth investigating: “How Felines Purr”

:flash: How fat would you have to be to stop a bullet? - “Have you ever wondered how fat you would have to be to stop a bullet? Well we did, and we went to the Cavendish Laboratory to find out.” i havent wondered, but hey, it’s another rather interesting question.

online video killed …

:flash: bumblebeez - dr. love - it has been awhile since i was that exited about a music video. fantastic!!!11! fat boy slim: praise you comes to mind.

:flash: Flight of the Conchords - Humans Are Dead Video - the greatest binary solo ever? we think so… [via bb]

:flash: Theremin Cover Version of Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy - stunning.

inner peace through outer violence

what’s going on in england at the moment? first manhunt 2 gets banned by the BBFC and now this ironic advert for burnout dominator gets pulled by the ASA, that’s the advertising standards authority.

is censoring violent video games the new black in england? i have to admit, i am surprised by this. haven’t they learned and accepted by now, that censorship never ever works, but only manages to make things like these much much MUCH more appealing? i mean, i want to play manhunt 2 now, and i have only barely recovered from playing manhunt 1, lol…

gadgetMinded couchPotato downgrader for PSP v. 3.50 firmware

weee. n00bz! did it again, they found a way to downgrade the latest version PSP firmware, the users will again be able to play homebrew. all it envolves is having a copy of lumines [check] and the latest version firmware 3.50 [i’m on it].

good news that. i had waited all this time to upgrade the firmware, because i didn’t want to lose my homebrew, until i finally caved in a few days ago for the excellent game crush. the PSP is now running v. 3.sumink, but sadly no homebrew. but before going for it, i discovered the following warning on the n00bz website:

Recent Sony official firmwares (3.30 onwards) have included checks that block upgrade from previously-downgraded PSPs with TA-082 or later motherboards. If you use this downgrader on such a PSP, you will lock yourself out of official firmware updates - although you will still be able to use new OE firmwares when they are released. We intend to release a tool to allow a return to official firmwares in the future.

what the hell? how on earth would that make sense? why would sony want to lock people out of future upgrades?

i have said this before, but here is is again: dear sony, you got it all wrong. you should be proud that people are writing homebrew for you console, not fight or prosecute them. it means they love this console enough to spend countless hours coding games. that’s free content and some of it has great quality.

ideeSwiss [f]Art pour l'Art kornhausforum erleidet mehlattacke

fantastic

:flash: mymobilesite.net - this is fantastic. nokia has released a server, to be installed on your mobilephone, that makes it possible to handle all contacts, calendar entries, photos etc. via a simple web browser on any computer. you can even remotely trigger the camera to take a photo. [via de-bug]

iPhone not worth the hype

:flash: The AT&T/iPhone Moral Quandary - “The problem is, the iPhone is only available through AT&T, in my opinion one of the most unscrupulous telecoms around. AT&T’s tactics combine Microsoft-style anti-competitive maneuvers and anti-privacy efforts á la RIAA for a chilling effect. I avoid giving AT&T any of my money; it’s a personal boycott.” this is pretty much how i feel about swisscom, rumored to be the swiss iPhone partner, and the reason why i won’t but the iPhone, if in fact they partner with swisscom.

:flash: l-rs.org - apple shrink the iPhone by using large hand model. [via bb]

looking for alternatives to WoW

:flash: the 5 stages of WoW - i hope i can soon add phase 6: Recovery “damn i am so over WoW. now back to my real life.”

:flash: DOFUS - cute, online flash game. new version available.

:flash: Myst Online | URU - this looks awesome. but its not available in switzerland yet.

:flash: The Lord of the Rings Online - people are raving about this game, it’s supposed to have a very good engine, storyline, interface. but i am not quite sure if i want to support this franchise. pc only.

:flash: Age of Conan - looks a little to gory. and vista only.

:flash: Hellgate: London - i love the scifi setting, the story line, the look and feel of this game; very promising. pc only.

:flash: Warhammer Online - the first M rated MMO, abit gory as well. pc only.

:flash: The Chronicles of SpellBorn - this looks kinda cool, but i somehow don’t understand much else about it from the website. pc only.

manhunt ban

:flash: Take suspends Manhunt 2 release - “Inevitable really. This morning, Take 2 announced that it would be suspending the release of Manhunt 2.”

:flash: Manhunt 2 ‘ban’ - it’s good, but is it right? - “Forget all the guff about parents, in the real world Manhunt 2 would have been played by 10 year olds on their Wii. Imagine how long it would have taken for the usual media suspects to pick up on little Johnny’s wiimote garroting pastime.”

:flash: Manhunt 2 banned in England - “Forget all the guff about parents, in the real world Manhunt 2 would have been played by 10 year olds on their Wii. Imagine how long it would have taken for the usual media suspects to pick up on little Johnny’s wiimote garroting pastime.”

my two cents: i played manhunt 1 for some shivers of epic proportions. yet i haven’t turned into a massmurderer. yet. and i must be TEH most immature 45 year old ever.

polynapping

:flash: Polynap MP3 Soundtrack - this guy offers m3 tracks for naps of various lengths, i downloaded the 5, 15 and 23 minute variety and have uploaded them on my mobile phone now. looking forward to some public napping in trains, trams. white noise ftw.

:flash: Power Napping: How To Fall Asleep Anywhere - “The trick is the use sleep MP3’s such as these. They are essentially MP3’s that play white noise for the duration of the nap, and then slowly wake you up by playing a variety of sounds.”

schmooze

:flash: Piece Of Plastic Slogans from The Advertising Slogan Generator - b3ta used in a much more, erm, shall i say, profane, way, but this works too.

:flash: Bush’s approval rating plunges to new low - “George W. Bush’s approval rating plunged to a new low of 26 percent, making him the least popular US president since Richard Nixon”

:flash: Study finds guys not so naughty, gals not so noble - “women on hormone-filled birth control pills were interested in the overall view of the photos and “background” items like jewelry. But women not on the pill were more interested in areas of both men and women normally covered by clothing.” ah, the pill sounds horrible.

:flash: Where Daft Punk got their samples from - bloody hell, the daft punk versions sound literally almost the same as the originals.

:flash: How Serious Is Polling’s Cell-Only Problem? - “If people who can only be reached by cell phone were just like those with landlines, their absence from surveys would not create a problem for polling. But cell-only adults are very different.”

:flash: How Many Licks Does it Take To Get to the Center of the Internet? - “The Internet may be referred to as the “information superhighway,” but a better analogy might be an enormous, hulking Tootsie Roll pop.”

:flash: The Guardian gets a Second Life - “Weekend after next The Guardian and Intel are hosting SecondFest inside virtual world Second Life, a three-day music and performance festival chokka block with big name real-life bands and in-world talent.” somehow exiting but i wonder, is this this gonna work? hmmm…

gadgetMinded intel inside - idiot outside

help!!!1

i believe, i got stuck in a loop in the throngs of the windows world and i cant seem to get out… can anybody please help me?

here’s what i did: yesterday i bought the parallels 3 upgrade, because they had announced, that it now allows for pc games to be installed and played. later i found out, tooo late, that this does not count for the latest generation of games, but only for crappy older games and none of the MMOs. of course the question that begs to be asked here is, am i a bloody noob or what?

one should never trust what these guys claim for their softwares without doublechecking - them.

ok ok, so i decided to give bootcamp a try, and went on to install a window xp system on a partition of my macbook. the installation went well enough, good job there, but then of course i couldn’t connect to the internet. easy enough that one, i thought, i forgot to install the drivers for ethernet and wifi airport. and apple even delivers these drivers with bootcamp. so i burned a cd, inserted, insta … but but but … not too fast, buster, not too easy. windows informed me that “this package requires a newer version of windows installer. do you want to update the version of your windows installer on your system?”. well, nice of you to ask, and yes please. i clicked yes. but then i was informed: “the required resource “UPDATE” is missing”. erm.

so. erm. i dunno, erm, but am i correct to assume, erm, that in order to update my windows installer i would have to be able to connect to the internet and in order to do that i would have to install the missing drivers, which i can’t install because the installer is outdated. can you see the loop form hell there? help? anyone?
