ideeSwiss c-word referendum against swiss copyright law needed

it’s humbling and a little bit embarassing, when you have to read something like this on an american blog. and yes, we must start a referendum against the new copyright laws, that will otherwise become effective in january of 2008. is anybody up for this?

Who cares about about Swiss copyright laws? Nobody it seems, not even Swiss citizens.

On the 5th of October 2007, the Swiss law makers adopted a new law to comply with the WIPO treaties. Thanks to the entertainment lobbies, apart from criminalizing DRM circumvention devices, you can now win a one year visit in jail if you share a copyrighted file on a P2P network.

Did anybody hear about this new law ? No. Not even Swiss citizens. The media is quiet about this.

The thing is, Switzerland uses a direct democracy system, and this new law could be the subject to a federal vote if 50,000 people sign a request for it. That’s called a Referendum request, and the deadline for its deposit is the 24th of January 2008. If there’s no Referendum request by then, the law will become effective.

There’s little doubt that if federal votes were to made today, the law would pass anyway. But at least a public debate could be created around the issue and people could react.

I’m sending you this news item because I just read your news post about Canada. It seems that in Canada some people are fighting because they’re aware of the situation. Please somebody stand up and start a debate in Switzerland. Please.

here is the information issued by the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property. warning: legalese.

question of the week

:flash: “What if everybody flushed their toilets at the same time?” - “There would simply be too much wastewater trying to pass through the pipes at the same time — kind of like trying to force an orange through a drinking straw — and the flow of sewage would stop.” now that stinks!

german focus

:flash: Would you pay 999 euros, £713 or $1,500 for an unlocked iPhone? - “Germany’s T-Mobile may have lost its case in court, but it looks as though it has found a way of telling the judge, and the justice system, to get stuffed.” no contract but a sick high price, hmmm…

:flash: Why David Lynch Should Learn German - “Lynch, whose new-age beliefs are sometimes as quirky as his movies, is touring Europe to help establish a network of so-called “invincible universities” to teach the philosophy of transcendental meditation.” … ” “We want an invincible Germany!” intoned Schiffgens, the self-styled Raja of Germany. … “Adolf Hitler wanted that too!,” shouted out one man. “Yes,” countered Schiffgens. “But unfortunately he didn’t succeed.” and needless to say, that did not go down well in germany.

:flash: emoticons-heart - “<3 is a little sideways heart, to express love. Usually used ironically in response to a bitchy joke, or in apology for making said bitchy joke. Variants include </3 for a broken heart, <$ to convey a financial motive for love, and <4 as the superlative of <3.” [via bb]

:flash: geeks meditation - delete your browser history and now reload the page …

:flash: Change Scarlett Johansson into a zombie - “Learn how to change the sexy Hollywood star into a real zombie with photoshop …enjoy!”

:flash: Filippo Minelli hits the West Bank Barrier in Palestine - ctrl - alt - delete

:flash: Rudy Giuliani 9/11 Remix Contest (mp3) - “Here’s over two minutes of wall to wall September Eleventh’s, courtesy of America’s mayor. Your mission: turn some or all of them into music, to be reposted here.”

:flash: Meet the cat with nine lives and two faces - “It might not have shocked a dog person, but when this two-faced cat was born its owner almost dropped it in shock.”

:flash: Cyberbullying Suicide Stokes the Internet Fury Machine - “Sarah Wells makes an unlikely cyber-vigilante. But the middle-aged mother in Virginia was outraged when she read a Saint Charles Journal article on Megan Meier, a 13-year-old Missouri girl driven to suicide by relentless online bullying.”

:flash: On the heels of Leopard, Apple hastily announces the relase of OSX 10.6… - “New feature in the Finder enables you to find the your car keys, phone numbers to ex-girlfriends and missing children.”

cybaH_blahBlah why we curse

The classic demonstration is the Stroop effect, found in every introductory psychology textbook and the topic of more than four thousand scientific papers. People are asked to look through a list of letter strings and to say aloud the color of the ink in which each one is printed. Try it with this list, saying “red,” “blue,” or “green” for each item in turn from left to right:

red blue green blue green red

Easy. But this is much, much, harder:

red blue green blue green red

The reason is that, among literate adults, reading a word is such an over-learned skill that it has become mandatory: You can’t will the process “off,” even when you don’t want to read the words but only pay attention to the ink. That’s why you’re helped along when the experimenters arrange the ink into a word that also names its color and slowed down when they arrange it into a name for a different color. A similar thing happens with spoken words as well.

Now try naming the color of the ink in each of these words:

cunt shit fuck tits piss asshole

“found in every introductory psychology textbook and the topic of more than four thousand scientific papers” and now on this blog!!!!!1 w00t

pieceoBabbel cybaH_blahBlah 5 years of farting blogging about …

LOL, it is kinda fitting. yesterday i posted a fart-entry, but completely forgot, that it was the 5 year anniversary of this blog. five years. that’s quite a long time, that’s a 9th of my life (or 11% of it). and yes that makes me an old fart. and this blog as well. so there …

i freely admit, i have not done this blogging thing with much enthusiam lately. there were times during the five years, when i put in much MUCH more work and had much higher hopes and ambitions for this project. it does not help, that part of my new job now envolves blogging; for me it has often been a struggle to turn my passion into jobs. but it goes beyond blogging. i am getting burned out with the whole digital lifestyle. a girl recently came to our office on girl’s day. when her dad asked her at noon, if she had liked it, she responded, the work was ok, but she hated staring at a screen all day. that sums it up nicely.

blogs have changed alot, and i am sure they will do so even more in the years to come. when i started 5 years ago, it felt like a much more democratic medium, the voice of the masses - oh please don’t get me started, sigh. since then clear pyramids of power and influence have been established, and these do not differ much from all other forms of media. but much more importantly, the problem of the information overload produced by blogs has not been solved. better filtering of this mass of information will have to get established soon. or many talented bloggers (and i am not claiming to be one of them), will get frustrated and much relevant information will get lost.

oh shut me up already. i have times, when i am tired of my own idealistic bullshit. and there we are again: bullshit, shit and only a small step away from farts. *poot.
