everyone (and their dog) has been raving about the iPhone/iPod Touch UI. and so am i. it’s amazing. wow. fantastic. i love it and try to show it to everyone i know. but. i have been using it for a few months now, and as some of you may know, i am a complete iPod noobtard, i had so far successfully not believed the hype. now some of the limitations of the UI are starting to seriously piss me off. so here are my questions:

- why can’t i delete music directly from my iPod Touch? (i would love to scan through albums and discard the crap on the fly. and i hope it’s not me being a n00b here. i have found a way to delete videos, but for the life of me i can’t seem to find a way to delete mp3s)
- why won’t the iPod just simply mount as a drive that lets me upload my data, not just the music and videos, but also any type of file, to transfer from one of MY computers to another? (yes yes, i can do that with air sharing, but that’s a weird work around. and the app now costs money)
- why am i forced to handle my data using iTunes?
- why can’t i download music from my iPod to tranfer it from one to my other computer? (and i did authorize them both!)
- why do i even need to authorize computers?
- why all the DRM crap? (don’t even get me started on that one)
- why can’t i write emails in panorama view? (i mean without having to get another app to do just that)
- why isn’t there a button to switch back to upsidedown view from panorama view in my mp3 player? (sometimes the wildest of shakes won’t switch views, and many functionalities are only … oh wait)
- why are so many functionalities limited to just one view in the mp3 player?
- why can the mp3 player run in the background while i browse other apps, but many other apps can’t do that?
- why can’t i copy/paste?
- WHY CAN”T I TURN OFF THE GODDAMN AUTO-CORRECTION???? (sorry for CAPS)
- why am i slowly but surely being pushed towards wanting to jailbreak a device that i paid good money for? (because most these things i ask are a given in jailbreaked devices)

i always thought there won’t be VOIP on the iPhone due to contractual agreements with the carriers. so i was surprised to see fring get an iPhone/iPod Touch release. the catch of course is, that i can only be used on WIFI but not using G3, and what a joke that is. never the less fring has shot up to number 1 in the free application list at the app store. at least here in switzerland. since i have used fring for awhile on my symbian phone, Nokia N95, i thought i’d compare the two implementations:

fring on iPhone/iPOd Touch

positive:
the graphic interface is awesome

negative:
VOIP limited to WIFI, and therefore dependent on the solidity of the WIFI connection
can’t run the application in the background, when i close the application i disconnect from the service
the oh soooo annoying auto-correction feature can’t be switched off when typing IMs

fring on symbian

positive:
lets me chose if i want to use WIFI or my mobile connection
has a hide feature, meaning it is still running in the background while i am doing other things
i can type IMs with my keyboard similar to text messaging, auto-correction i can switch off

negative:
the graphical interface is atrocious looks extremely retro and fuzzy

basically the iPhone implementation is pretty to look at but other than that pretty much unusable. i love pretty things so i might still prefer to use it, if say i am next door waiting for someone to log onto skype. but nothing else makes sense.

(btw. i installed this on my iPod Touch, knowing full well that i cann’t use the skype call function, which i could only use if i jailbreak my iPod. but fring is a decent IM client as well, it lets me add icq, yahoo, msn, aol accounts and use my iPod touch to be available for IMs.)

and i answer (and why would steve care): it is cool, steve, but even cooler would have been:

- not slaving the device to iTunes. or in other words leaving people the choice to either sync it via iTunes or by another method. that lawsuit ain’t going away, dude.
- not slaving the phone to one network, but instead having it work on all networks. gosh, i am scared to find out what network apple will choose in europe. vodaphone? let’s pray not.
- a modular structure that allows users to install or uninstall all software in a truely customised manner. i mean, if the phone is running os x, why not install just the os and let the user deal with the rest. we ain’t stupid, you know…
- gsm??? that’s so last century, to use one of your phrases.
- generally speaking, the phone is too strongly geared towards pulling people into the mac universe, syncing contacts via – i assume – adress book, bookmarks from safari (not the coolest browser there is … or a matter of opinion), etc.
- june 2007 in the us??? third quarter in europe?
- and regarding the presentation, if you place 200+ patents on this device, at least don’t brag about it in a culture that is shifting towards all things less copyrighted, open source, user-generated, hack customisation.
- and what’s with the brand name droppings, nbc, starbucks, etc etc …

but having said all this, the ui is so incredibly cool, i can’t wait to get my hands, or rather my fingers, on it. gief.
