Title: Music Is The Highest Form Of Thought
It’s a difficult month for anti-nationalistic football lovers/haters like myself, when football is dominating every aspect of life during an entire month (as illustrated with the flipping burgers above), because of the damn Euro 2024 in Germany.
Meanwhile in Germany they claim this tournament will be another Sommermärchen, a summer fairy tale, in reference to the world cup 2006, that was held in the same country. Nationalism and patriotism had been a taboo in Germany until 2006, for the obvious, historical reasons. But then, during said world cup, many Germans for the first time waved their national flags again. As has often been written about since then, the analyses seems clear, the party-patriotism that reigned in 2006 has been instrumental in the resurgence of the far right in Germany. And this is the year when the fascist AfD *spits* has reached majorities in several state parliaments.
So what could possibly go right in re-issuing the Sommermärchen?!
The incredible number of racist and nationalistic incidents that have already occurred, when we have only reached the midpoint of Euro 2024, to me this sounds rather like a Sommeralptraum, a summer nightmare.
Even footballistically speaking this tournament has sucked. Many of the top teams do not play well, their stars look arrogant and tired. As such it was quite the symbol, when Belgian fans booed their own players, after unfair time wasting against Ukraine. If any team would have merited the symbolic success of making it to the next round, in the middle of the ongoing, horrendous war against Russia, it would have been the Ukrainians.
I did watch some games, might as well, but they were so boring. Why did i watch them? Because you can’t get away from them anyway.
At this point in time football has become an imperative. All the neighbors scream it from their balconies, while presumably flipping nationalistic burgers on their grills. Every news show gets dominated by it. Every butcher promotes their special edition burger. Every fucking car sports a fucking national flag. Fuck off.
The (former) beautiful game has gotten marketed to smithereens.
All this to say, this is my anti-football mix, guaranteed with no mention of the nationalistic tournament.
Because fuck that.
