Title: The Antifascist Funky Carnaval Edition

A carnival float has the writing ACAB in gold on the back, in front stands a masked reveller with a black mask typical of the carnival in Basel
Does fake police count in ACAB?

Hi folks.

Last Saturday we attended the first edition of the antifascist carnival in Lausanne, Switzerland. Carnaval populaire et déter – Contre la montée du fascisme. It was fantastic. Loved every second of it, except the time when we lost each other and i did not have a phone. I will draw energy from this event for months to come. (I hope)

This was the first demonstration, or parade, that i attended since the start of COVID-19–and my Long COVID. I was quite nervous, if my energy was going to hold, if i would crash afterwards or–even worse–if i’d catch a viral infection.

But so far *fingers crossed* it seems to have gone okay. I’ve only had a minor crash, mostly manifesting in muscular and skeletal pains. So far it seems as if the ffp2 mask that i/we wore at all times protected me–and us–just fine. Because almost no one else wore a mask, i saw maybe 5 people and most in the laughable blue ones. However i heard many people coughing.

Most carnivals these days are too big, too commercial or just plain lame. They carry only a shadow of the subversive and rebellious potential that they could have. But this carnival was different. It had wild costumes, dozens of Luigis, of course, and many Cthulhus, why?, good music, lots of smiling people (yes, i saw that because most people were unmasked) and dancing in the street.

I really hope this parade catches on and turns into a yearly ritual. We need such free expressions of joy and irreverence. Next year i hope there will even be a mask bloc!

The lack of masks is my only beef with this year’s event. Other than that 💯. No notes.

A person wearing a black overall and a red wig, with a huge smile and teeth, holds a small bomb prop in their righ hand and pretends to take a sip from it
Mhh, tastes good

Just a few remarks on the audio collage: These days i am bit ambivalent to feature contrapoints, her politics are too bizarre now. But here quotes on QAnon and the “storm” were a match with Leftfield – Storms End. All storms end.

We are seeing many 5 year pandemic articles these days, most of them depressing, revisionist and past-tensing the pandemic. For me the overwhelming outcome is that i almost cannot believe what is happening. Like the Adam character in The Francise i often wonder if someone is pulling a joke on me. The 5 year Long COVID survey asked what the biggest grief was, for me it is the loss of community. The people i thought i could trust in a crisis turned out to be ableist assholes.

A person wearing a lucha libre mask, pants, boxing gloves and a silver down jacket sits on a grey folding bike, an older man holding a child checks them out with a puzzling look
No no, i can handle the breaks easy with them gloves

So here it is.

The latest SITV-audio collage.

What do you think?

I hope you enjoy it.
