With the ongoing brutal war in Gaza, some people, including myself, were reminded of the brilliant anti-war poem Not In Our Name by Saul Williams. Initially released in 2003 during the war on Iraq, it does contain some lines specific to that war, but many others seem to fit perfectly well in the current Israel-Gaza war.

“Not in our name will you erode the very freedoms you have claimed to fight for.

Not by our hands will we supply weapons and funding for the annihilation of families on foreign soil.

Not by our mouths will we let fear silence us.

Not by our hearts will we allow whole peoples or countries to be deemed evil.

Not by our will and not in our name.

We pledge resistance.

We pledge alliance with those who have come under attack for voicing opposition to the war or for their religion or ethnicity.

We pledge to make common cause with the people of the world to bring about justice, freedom and peace.

Another world is possible and we pledge to make it real”

It is not looking good.
So many innocent people are already confirmed dead, many stuck under the rubble.
Famine seems inevitable.
A ground invasion of Rafah is said to be imminent, despite worldwide opposition to this further escalation.
With agony we observe the way peaceful and non-violent student protests on US campuses and around the world are suppressed in a brutal manner.
Politicians continue in their effort to declare any form of criticism of the state Israel as antisemitic (which, to be clear, it can sometimes be, but quite often is not).

Meanwhile the idea of these student protests is spreading.
They are now setting up such a protest camp at the university of Lausanne, the first in Switzerland.

But all this can get a bit overwhelming for someone like myself, confined to my home, ill, isolated and lonely.
There is not a whole lot i can do, except to watch with growing horror what is going on and to hope to keep my despair in check.
Often i don’t even know what to say anymore.

When i am at a loss for words, sometimes i turn to music to try and express my feelings.

So, i made a mix tape. LOL.

For the music it seemed to make sense to re-visit an older mix ‘slam the words’, inspired by the movie Slam featuring Saul Williams.

This is my way of sending solidarity to the civilians in Gaza and to the brave student protestors everywhere.

Another World is Possible and We Pledge To Make it Real!
Ceasefire Now!
Another World is Possible and We Pledge To Make it Real!
Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest!
Another World is Possible and We Pledge To Make it Real!

Oh and:

Another World is Possible and We Pledge To Make it Real!

Yup:

Another World is Possible and We Pledge To Make it Real!
