Liberalism in Theory and Practice (jacobin) – “In theory, modern liberalism is a set of ideas about human freedom, markets, and representative government. In practice, or so it now seems to me, it has largely become a political affect, and a quintessentially conservative one at that: a set of reflexes common to those with a Panglossian faith in capitalist markets and the institutions that attempt to sustain them amid our flailing global order.” A concise description of where the liberal position stands currently.

#watch,

“APPLE PRODUCT LAUNCH” — A Bad Lip Reading – “Apple announces multiple new products in an attempt to expand the company’s brand….”

World Music 2018 – Another fantastic mashup by the guys from 120 minutes.

School strike for climate – save the world by changing the rules | Greta Thunberg – “Greta Thunberg realized at a young age the lapse in what several climate experts were saying and in the actions that were being taken in society. The difference was so drastic in her opinion that she decided to take matters into her own hands.” #TeamGreta

Your Kombucha Isn’t Actually Kombucha – This is what the Japanese Kombucha, it’s quite different, of course, but everyone knew that. But of course it sounds better, if you try to create a huge polemic and claim that this actually is the REAL kombucha. Anyway, the video still has nice images.

Douglas Rushkoff: How to be “Team Human” in the digital future (ted) – “Humans are no longer valued for our creativity, says media theorist Douglas Rushkoff — in a world dominated by digital technology, we’re now just valued for our data. In a passionate talk, Rushkoff urges us to stop using technology to optimize people for the market and start using it to build a future centered on our pre-digital values of connection, creativity and respect.” #TeamHuman

Final Straw: Cindy Milstein on Grief, Care, Anarchy, and Vision (it’s going down) – “The Final Straw sits down with long term anarchist writer, organizer, and author to discuss a variety of topics.”

That reverb…. (Rejoice) – “This is a Pantheon style Cathedral in Montefrio, Spain. The design allows for a 6 second long reverb. As an audio engineer, this definitively blows my mind.”

The Itsy-Bitsy, Teenie-Weenie, Very Litigious Bikini (nyt) – “Ms. Ferrarini’s standard two-piece has two dark denim triangles connected by visible stitches of embroidery thread to crochet straps with brightly colored elastics woven through them. The bottom is made to match. It is virtually identical to the bikini Ms. Irgit had copyrighted.” Different standards apply.

Politigram & Post-Left 2018 – I have so many questions about this paper. Posted here just because of all the (leftist?) memes it features.

Thousands forced to spend night at airport as chaos continues – as it happened (the guardian) – “Travel disruption has led to 657 flights being cancelled” One drone!

Human rights for the 21st century: by Margaret Atwood, Reni Eddo-Lodge, Dave Eggers and more (the guardian) – “The right to live offline, to self-define, to choose, to a healthy planet … as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights turns 70, leading authors reimagine it for today.” Short essays, there’s also one by James Bridle.

Why is Epic Games Getting Sued Over Fortnite’s Dance Moves? – “A storm is coming for Fortnite. […] Earlier this month, a trio of creators sued Fortnite’s publisher, Epic Games, over its use of the dance moves they created, which gamers can perform (and purchase) in-game with the push of a button.” In-game purchase is the crux here.

Archivists Say Tumblr IP Banned Them For Trying to Preserve Adult Content (vice) – “Following a ban on adult content, archivists raced to save Tumblr’s NSFW communities—but some say the platform tried to stop them.” That’s what you get, when you allow hipsters to run companies.

Turning Online Harassment and Abusive Comments Into Art (wired) – “For The Bully Pulpit, Morris-Cafiero spent five years collecting more than 1,000 nasty comments she encountered online. Most were posted on her social media accounts, though some came via email or imageboard 4chan. Using “shitty wigs” and obvious prosthetics, Morris-Cafiero recreated the online profile pictures of 25 harassers, giving them the same crude treatment in return.” In Switzerland there are Slam readings, where people read the hateful comments they received.

Facebook’s Data Sharing: 5 Takeaways From Our Investigation (nyt) – “an investigation by The New York Times, […] reveals that the marketplace for that data is even bigger than many consumers suspected. And Facebook, which collects more information on more people than almost any other private corporation in history, is a central player.” Oh you mean, it’s even worse?

Why Albert Einstein hated capitalism (treehugger) – “The individual has become more conscious than ever of his dependence upon society. But he does not experience this dependence as a positive asset, as an organic tie, as a protective force, but rather as a threat to his natural rights, or even to his economic existence. The economic anarchy of capitalist society as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of the evil.” This article is not great, but contains some nice Einstein quotes. Makes you wonder, what Einstein would have thought of Datacapitalism.

Blind creature that buries head in sand named after Donald Trump (the guardian) – “A newly discovered blind and burrowing amphibian is to be officially named Dermophis donaldtrumpi, in recognition of the US president’s climate change denial.” You insult this beautiful worm.

Tumblr’s Porn Filter Flags Its Own Examples of ‘Permitted’ Nudity – “On Monday, Tumblr’s staff account published a message aimed at “clarify[ing]” the new policy, which takes effect today. Embedded in the post was a gif providing several examples of nudity that is “still permitted within our policy.” Permitted when posted by Tumblr’s official account, maybe, but still flagged when uploaded by regular users.” That’s what you get, when… (see above)

Link Taxes and Upload Filters Will Not Fix the Internet – “We spoke to Pirate MEP Julia Reda on the risks these proposals pose for users, publishers, and European platforms and asked her about the way forward for digital politics in Europe.” EU, please just don’t.

False Flag: A Story of Copyright and Corporate Censorship – “As the struggle to prevent proposals becoming law continues, this short story by Cory Doctorow asks the question of what the copyright directive means for democracy and activism as we know them.” A short story tellin the EU please just don’t.

8 Sci-Fi Writers Imagine the Bold and New Future of Work (wired) – “Facts need feelings, and for that we turn to science fiction. Its authors are our most humane, necessary futurists, imagining not just what the future holds but how it might look, feel, even smell. In the following pages are stories from eight sci-fi specialists.” Several short stories, but I admit, I only red the one by Laurie Penny. So far.

They Grabbed Her Baby and Arrested Her. Now Jazmine Headley Is Speaking Out. (nyt) – “Jazmine Headley took her baby boy to a public benefits office in Brooklyn on a recent Friday to find out why the city had abruptly stopped paying for him to go to day care while she worked cleaning offices.” Police brutality is endemic.

Climate change: The massive CO2 emitter you may not know about (bbc) – “Concrete is the most widely used man-made material in existence. It is second only to water as the most-consumed resource on the planet.” Clickbait headline, but the article features some interesting graphics.

Google says it won’t sell face recognition for now—but it will be hard to slow its use – “Google will stop offering face recognition through its cloud APIs—that is, until it can come up with policies to prevent misuses of the technology” Too little too late. Plus, others will.

Stansted 15: ‘We are not terrorists, no lives were at risk. We have no regrets’ (the guardian) – “Two of the protesters convicted for preventing a deportation flight tell of their shock at the verdict” Seriously, how can these guys be considered terrorists?

Signal app to Australia: Good luck with that crypto ban (ars technica) – “By design, Signal does not have a record of your contacts, social graph, conversation list, location, user avatar, user profile name, group memberships, group titles, or group avatars,” Joshua Lund, a Signal developer wrote. “The end-to-end encrypted contents of every message and voice/video call are protected by keys that are entirely inaccessible to us. In most cases now we don’t even have access to who is messaging whom.” Signal is saying, challenge accepted.

Is Impostor Syndrome just for women? There are some men I can think of… | Catherine Bennett (the guardian) – “It’s now become a public ritual for a successful woman to out herself for having self-doubts” I know so many male imposters. I even would be one, if I had any job.

Visualizing the History of Fugazi – Carni Klirs – “Fugazi documented everything. They kept ledgers. They recorded their live shows. In 2011 the band put together a Fugazi Live Series website that includes information on every show they ever played. They’ve consistently been adding live recordings to the archive, and are now up to more than 800 shows. There is an obsessive amount of detail on each show, such as how many people attended, who they played with, and a comments section where attendees of that show can share their experiences. So I decided to scrape data off of that webpage and try to visualize the history of the band, to convey why they were important to me, and to so many others.” WWFD is one of the best life mottos you can have (what would Fugazi do).

Kummer makes a strong argument, but I think in the current political climate (disinformation, fake news, alternate facts) he takes the easy way out.

I was as surprised as you may well be, that of all papers die Welt would feature a relatively smart critique of Peterson.

Finally.

Professorin ĂŒber Gender-Studies-Verbote: „Ein Angriff auf die Demokratie“ (taz) – “Das Studienfach Gender Studies gerĂ€t europaweit immer stĂ€rker in die Kritik. In Ungarn ließ Viktor OrbĂĄn es dieses Jahr verbieten” The view from inside Hungary.

Sarasin pointing to the rightwing form of identity politics.
