Title: Listen More

Street art fromn San Francisco saying "Listen More"
Street Art from San Francisco, Photo by Jon Chester

A while ago I saw this great image (above) on the instagram feed of my friend Jon Chester. I assume the photo must have been taken near ocean beach in San Francisco on his way to go surfing.

The image talked to me strongly, the misty mood and colors and the raven accentuating it all, i think i may have featured it here before.

I believe “Listen More” to be an essential message for our times. We do need to learn to listen more, first and foremost to each other, to women, lgbtqi+ people, especially trans these days, poc, and all the other marginalized people. This weekend their is a vote on a proposed adaption to the swiss old age insurance that primarily disadvantages women (graphic bellow). And no one listened to the women. Which is why this mix features mostly female and non-binary artists.

But we also need to listen more to nature, to animals, to the subtle things, to silence.

In a world where the noise of cars and other engines dominates our daily soundscape, silence has become a precious, rare good. As I write this a huge crew of weed whackers (i can count 5) swarms the place where we live (while everyone knows, that a sickle would do the job better, with less damage to nature and almost no noise or even a pleasant one). Leaf blowers are another unnecessary, loud noise pollution. There is nothing wrong with a broom. We even have a neighbor here, who bought a loud! industrial vacuum cleaner, that he uses to clean the outside floor around his entrance.

But besides the permanent hum of engine noise invading our lives in later stage capitalism, people in general and my neighbors in particular are increasingly annoying me. They seem to be stuck in permanent broadcasting mode, yelling their emotions (or what have you) out to no one in particular as if they were in permanence streaming it to their instagram feeds.

I cannot put a number on the percentage of time i spend trying to drown out outside noise by listening to music, tv series, podcasts etc. It’s a very big number. At times, this constant need to drown out the neighbors noise, it makes me almost hate my music.

And even if there is silence, my tinnitus is always there (and it has gotten much worse thanks to COVID).

I am dreaming of a sanctuary, a place without car, engine or industrial noise and with respectful and considerate people. And no fucking cow bells either.

The interview with Volcler (link bellow) has interesting reflections on the role of sound in our lives, in particular on industrial sound design choices and their implications. She proposes a way to curate our soundscapes by selecting the pleasant sounds that surround us and focusing on them. I wish i could, but the leaf blowers drown everything out.

The mix also features the few bits that i found by a french (i assume female) rapper, that i totally love. I believe their name is totoro, but i can’t find any more information on them. I think they are amazing, the way they can fall into a whisper to crank it back up to a yell within just a few lines. I would love to hear more from them.
