Best of 2022 – For Note Keeping5 min read

[at this point i make this list not to sell product, but just to keep notes. i find the lists helpful sometimes, to go back in time to see what i was into a few years ago, but also as an aid for my faltering memory. after 10 years with those silly thumbnails, what i called “the jump page”, i changed format this year. it’s just a bloody list now. and also, pandemic or endemic, you still do not want to get infected with COVID, so do the thing. also, if you are still on twitter please stop calling yourself an anti-fascist. thank you]

Best of 2022 collage showing most of the covers mentioned in the list
et puis voila

Album

Little Simz – No Thank You
very late addition to the list tops it, awesome
Kae Tempest – The Line Is A Curve
Kae with another very strong album mending rap with poetry
Danger Mouse and Black Thought – Cheat Codes
apparently this took years to make. worth the wait
Heavenly remixes 3&4: Weatherall
Andrew Weatherall must have been one of the best remixers
Hudson Mohawke – Cry Sugar
flirts with pop then fucks you over
Burial – Streetlands
a very ambient release, more by Burial bellow

Track

Plaid – Perspex
Plaid also had an album out and as you all know it’s almost the next best thing as a new Boards of Canada album, for which we have to keep waiting
Deichkind – In Der Natur
merits to be mentioned for the great video alone
The Smile – Pana-vision
don’t get me wrong, i enjoyed the album by The Smile, it conjures early Radiohead vibes, but this song in particular
KAFVKA- Querdenker klatschen
… aber als Zeitdokument
Burial – Antidawn
but wait, the entire ep is great, as usual for Burial

Videos

A Brief Look at Jordan Peterson – SOME MORE NEWS
it really is only a very brief 2 1/2 hour long look, lol
Is “Cancel Culture” Really a Threat To America?
Michael Hobbes at his best
Anarchism and Democracy
Zoe Baker taking apart anarchy and democracy
Tim Pool: Fence Sitter
timbah.on.toast ripping tim pool a new one

Podcast

Death Panel
much needed political context in the pandemic, i rarely felt so understood and they are fucking marxists. i would have called their community my safe haven, but then they kicked me from their discord server for reasons i still don’t understand
Mother Country Radicals
the fact that their son made this series makes this a great listen
The Sunshine Place
this reminded me of my time at Le Patriarche in the 80s and i wanted to do a podcast about my time there. but yes, audible still sucks
Special: Joe Rogan ‘Sorry, not Sorry’
thorough, to say the least

Books

Non Fiction:
Health Communism – Beatrice Adler-Bolton & Artie Vierkant
the book written by the hosts of the Death Panel podcast above offers deep political and historic context for structural ableism and eugenics from a marxist point of view
The Solutions Are Already Here – Peter Gelderloos
a righteous deconstruction of green-washing politicking, with great examples of actually ecological projects on the ground and a beautiful anarchist utopia of the much needed coming ecological revolution. and yes, the solutions are already here.
Try Anarchism For Life – Cindy Milstein
the beautiful, simple idea comes with very inspiring and poetic writing.
Elite Capture – Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò
offers perspective on identity politics and a leftist critique of problematic aspects of its appropriation by the fucking liberals
Q Comme Qomplot – Wu Ming 1
i loved reading this book about QAnon and conspiracy myths a lot, sadly the chapters about the COVID-19 pandemic are problematically close to Agamben. But i think it’s still a great book – if you read french (or italian)

Fiction:
Sibylle Berg – RCE
german: das Buch hat gewisse Längen, wiederholt sich manchmal ein bisschen, aber die overall message ist fantastisch und der schluss macht Hoffnung. gespannt wohin uns Buch drei der Serie führt.
Margaret Killjoy – A Country of Ghosts
a beautiful utopian vision that interestingly could be situated in the future or in the past.
Virginie Despentes – Cher Conard
not even close to the Subutex series, but still an entertaining read

Cookbook:
Hannah Che – The Vegan Chinese Kitchen
it made me so happy to find this book. the kitchen reminds me of my favorite chinese vegan in San Francisco on Geary
Meat-Free Mexican – Tomasina Miers
many great ideas for a lover of mexican food
Rosa’s Thai Cafe – Saiphin Moore
dito for a lover of thai food
Ottolenghi Test Kitchen – Extra Good Things
a solid Ottolenghi book with not too many meat recipes, but there are some

TV Series

Le Monde de Demain
the beginnings of hip hop in France with a beautiful, engaging cast, focusing on Supreme NTM and DJ Dee Nasty. this was on Arte, but not anymore
The Walk-In
Stephen Graham plays an ex-fascist now fighting against fascism and hate for Hope Not Hate
This Is Going To Hurt
the decline of the NHS told with often amusing, often sad untertones, based on the book by Adam Kay
This England
can’t say it was easy to watch this mini-series by Michael Winterbottom. the realism of the series was in my view very moving, even if some front line workers said it was not harsh enough
Pistol
sure, i enjoyed this, great memories of a punky youth

Movies

Nope
just fantastic, not much else to say
Everything Everywhere All At Once
all the praise you already read is more than merited
Decision to Leave
what a story
White Noise
already loved the Don DeLillo book, the movie was well done
Licorice Pizza
brilliant. Paul Thomas Anderson.
