[The Must Read[s] This Month]
There Are Too Many Stories Like This: Rape Culture on the Ballot | Rebecca Solnit [substack] – "It's all a bet that this type of politics can get out a certain type of voter that they don't think they can get out any other way at this point, especially without Trump on the ballot. … “they think that misogyny is the tool for bringing them out and not just for bringing out white men, but that has been the key for drawing black men and Latino men into their coalition. That's been something that they have pressed on again and again because it's their way to a rainbow coalition on the right.” A term I came across recently, vice signaling, the opposite of virtue signaling, describes the conservative invitation to be liberated from the obligations of compassion and honesty, to wallow in racism, misogyny, and lies." Solnit loses me, as usual, when she goes into full-on electoral mode, but this is a highly relevant piece.
[Articles English]
//CW: Emotional and sexual abuse
Annie Altman v Sam Altman [nerve] – "Last month, the AI billionaire and his youngest sibling gave pre-trial depositions in a case brought by Annie claiming repeated abuse when she was a child. With her lawsuit in jeopardy, the Nerve’s Lucia Osborne-Crowley speaks to her and investigates a long-running story that has been largely ignored by the media" I watched some of the video of Ann Altman’s deposition, how dare that lawyer be such an asshole?
(Mis)Adventures in the Manosphere | Rebecca Solnit [the nation] – "The Internet was built by men for men, most especially by white men for white men, and there’s a way in which, in the past, you could assume that it concentrated their power and advantage. It does that. But that’s not all it does. The Internet has increasingly become a predatory monster that exploits its own: the people it was made for. Today, a vast array of online platforms—misogynistic porn, crypto, sports-betting and prediction markets, masculinity influencers, and right-wing and racist propaganda—gnaws through minds, hearts, and souls on its way to wallets." https://archive.ph/6Ule9#selection-1127.0-1127.568 This article meanders all over the place, the above piece is much better.
Voting, Begging, Demanding, Seizing | Margaret Killjoy [substack] – "I don’t expect politicians to be good. I don’t expect them to be on my side. Both sides of the aisle were in the Epstein files. When I vote, I don’t enter the booth thinking “I’m going to choose the person who represents my interests in this grand democratic project.” I enter the booth thinking “with this one hour of my day, I’ll express my opinion about the terrain on which I’d like to keep fighting for a better world.” And I’d rather be fighting the democrats than the fascists. I read enough history to know that accelerationism doesn’t work. I know that you can’t make things worse in order to wake people up and have a grand and glorious revolution. I read enough history to know that it’s easier to win concessions from a liberal democracy than a totalitarian state, that when they give you an inch you can try to take a mile." I am not usually a huge fan of her writing, but this article offers a pragmatic angle to frame the dreaded “as anarchists should we vote or not?” question.
Children against patriarchy and capital – Interview with Sophie Lewis [tidningenbrand.se] – "From the perspective of capitalism, around the turn of the century there were many children who lived relatively free from leadership. It was common with children living as vagabonds, tramps, thieves, street kids. And sometimes as semi-separatist communes. There are historical examples of what we might call a kind of children's autonomy." The interview was published in Swedish and title and quote were machine translated. I am a little worried about the next book by Sophie Lewis. It is so easy to fall into romantisation when it comes to children.
FKKKING CANCELLED | Alison Rose Reed [substack] – "There’s an epidemic, after all, of whataboutism. Of what-about-me-ism. Of historical amnesia. Denial. Optimizing alienation. Of blaming the victim to become one. Because wounded egos so desperately cling to a mythic victimhood that they’ll sacrifice anyone who threatens them. " I had not heard about these guys, yet, and they sure sound nasty. But for me the article excels in more general reflections and pieces of wisdom.
‘If we burn, you burn’: hundreds arrested at protests across France – in pictures [the guardian] – France, always the best source for awesome riot porn. I had huge FOMO these weeks.
Weather Atlas – Interactive map that can kelp to find a place to move to according to a climate that suits.
Inner Degrowth: An engineer on why the energy crisis and our inner emptiness are the same problem [resilience] – "I use the image of an ideal gas. Leave it free and it fills whatever space you give it, a bottle or a whole room. The mind does the same with any capacity it gets: more time, more money, more energy. It doesn’t save them. It uses them all, and then it wants more. That is the core of the book. The energy crisis and the emptiness so many of us feel are the same phenomenon: asking material things for a fulfillment they cannot give." I think this guy is cute.
Global Climate Report | September 2026 [ncei] – "The global surface temperature for September 2026 was 1.33°C (2.39°F) above the 20th-century average, ranking as the second-warmest September since global records began in 1850. This value falls behind 2023 by 0.07°C (0.13°F). September 2026 marked the 51st consecutive September with global temperatures above the 20th-century average. Notably, the past four Septembers (2023–2026) represent the four warmest Septembers on record and are the only Septembers to exceed a +1.0°C (+1.8°F) departure. All 10 of the warmest Septembers have occurred since 2015." We good, nothing to see here.
Ireland’s Matches Against Israel Should Have Been Canceled [jacobin] – "Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu took a brave stand by refusing to play against Israel on Sunday night. It was the cowardice of football’s governing bodies and their refusal to exclude Israel from international competition that made his stand necessary." Only one fucking player refused to participate in this game. Only one!

At least the Swiss right-wing identitarians did not walk free.
Look, i don’t think that insurrectionalism will advance our cause. But i sure understand the sentiment of this piece.
Exactly what i kept thinking when watching the final season of this series. I thought it was almost revisionist.
Can’t wait for the results.
[Older articles, still great]
Reformism | Errico Malatesta [libcom] – "We are reformers today in so far as we seek to create the most favourable conditions and as large a body of enlightened militants so that an insurrection by the people would be brought to a satisfactory conclusion. We shall be reformers tomorrow, after a triumphant insurrection, and the achievement of freedom, in that we will seek with all the means that freedom permits, that is by propaganda, example and even violent resistance against anyone who should wish to restrict our freedom in order to win over to our ideas an ever greater number of people." What Errico said.
