DOWNLOAD: The Future Is Feminist [166.3 MB – 1:09:08 – 320kbs]
Ohai. I made you a mixtape.
What’s it about? Well, the title kind of says it all. This thematic mix features feminist samples and music by women artists, with just a few exceptions, one being the Boards of Canada Remix by Odd Nosdum (because no mix works without a BoC track), another is the track by Cristobal Tapia de Veer (from the Black Mirror soundtrack), which is only used to connect two other tracks, Bibio and Cut Chemist feature women prominently.
Why this mix, you ask? Well, the world went many steps backwards in recent years. There’s an accused serial sexual abuser in the white house, an alleged rapist as president of the most powerful nation can only mean one things: structural sexism and misogyny, so blatantly in our faces, are back with a vengeance today. And the trend is spreading everywhere, right wing populism showing it’s ugly anti-feminist face again in Hungary, Italy and Brazil to name just a few of the worst examples.
Looking around at the mess we have created in the world, on our beautiful host planet (Gaia), it seems clear to me, the feminist struggle is one of the crucial, if not the most central struggles that we have to address to make things better. It’s time to fight back, and women are at the forefront of it. Meanwhile online the backlash women and feminists are facing is huge, via “social” media women get bullied in unheard of ways. Is this the time of the monsters, as Gramsci described it, where the old patriarchal beast is rearing it’s head for one last time? Maybe. But there is no doubt, it is time for a fundamental change. The world needs a multicultural, pluralist, inclusive, intersectional, and hopefully anti-capitalist feminism.
The future is feminist. We got this.
Are you a feminist, you ask? Of course I am a feminist. I grew up with a feminist mother, not a radical one maybe, but of course I was on board. And of course I find it pathetic that in 2018 we still have to discuss this even. Of course 51% of humanity (women) deserve equal rights, respect, safety, freedom, inclusion. Of course cis-men like myself need to combat sexual abuse in all its forms (even the structural ones) and take a strong stance against misogyny and sexism.
This truly is a no brainer. So let’s get started.
